Driving To Get Fruit
Share
This I started out intending to be a nice neutral shapes collage abstract piece, but I decided to add some doodles to it and it really became a map. Now I haven't driven in a few years because of the loss of concentration I feel on my medications, but when I drove I always used paper maps and had to even draw my own maps. I can't pay attention to the map app directions on most driving apps. I tune out the sounds and then miss the turns. I always want to know the whole path I am driving with a paper map if I go anywhere. This is hard to come by now. Paper maps are only really sold at highway gas stations these days, and then only for the immediate surroundings. We are getting into a change of practice in map reading. I wonder if this generation can read maps that don't enlarge as you touch them. Something as simple as going to the grocery store to get fruit is what I would draw a little map for until I knew it by landmarks. It drives me crazy not to be able to just run out and get things. But now we have wonderful delivery services like walmart plus which actually takes snap food stamp cards. That place is a life saver. It seems like ages ago I was a mother of two children, driving them to school, doing all the shopping. My youngest just turned 21. It is amazing what changes in the world can do for the everyday comfort of someone who has to spend a lot of time at home. Reading maps may have changed for younger people, but I will always stick to old foldy paper and plastic coated maps. I have a deep fear of getting lost.
So this image is about happily
running out for groceries with my little map. Normal everyday things.
